Social Network Profile Picture- Your Character Judgment Parameter
Very shortly the Facebook users who haven’t upgraded their Facebook profile to the timeline design will be automatically upgraded to the timeline profile design, which means that now your profile picture will not be the only concern, the larger picture like sign board i.e. cover photo would be the more clearer view of your profile.
It’s been said very rightly that don’t judge a book by its cover but it’s amazing to know that more than 60% of the Facebook users are judged on the basis of their cover/profile photos rather than their written profile info or about me. Below is a very interesting study regarding the judgment on cover/profile picture. The study was done by the assistant professor of communication at Ohio State University, Mr. Brandon Van Der Heide along with graduate students Jonathan D’Angelo and Erin Schumaker
The study states that,
“Photos seem to be the primary way we make impressions of people on social networking sites, if your profile photo fits what they expect, observers may be unlikely to look very closely at the rest of your profile – they have already decided how they feel about you. But most of the time, snap judgements are made without reading any of the words on the profile. The students were asked to look at profiles with a photo and an ‘about me’ section and then rate from one to seven how extroverted they thought the user was. The students judged that those who had pictures of themselves with friends were extroverted even if the ‘about me’ portion suggested otherwise. They found exceptions to the findings when users had pictures that were particularly different. People will accept a positive photo of you as showing how you really are, but if the photo is odd or negative in any way, people want to find out more before forming an impression, If your photo is not quite normal – either positively or negatively – people are going to pay a lot more attention to what you wrote.”
The core and lead author of study also said that their studies was only and lonely based on the social media giant Facebook but this study can be implemented or can be used to predict the user behavior on other social networks as well where profile pictures are used.
Also, everyone doesn’t uses their original picture as their profile or cover photo and the study was also not about that EXCEPTION case but somehow this study has some weight in it which is a point to think over as in coming days the cover photos are going to take over on website.
